Viral Marketing Campaign
By Bizymoms.com Management
Admittedly the words Viral Campaign does sound ominous. However it is a force to reckon with in the world of online marketing. The online business community is abuzz with the numerous benefits that viral can bring to a business. With the potential of reaching across thousands and millions of audiences, viral is one tool that every entrepreneur worth his salt needs to adopt.

Viral defined

You may at some point have come across the term viral marketing, perhaps in blogs or articles. There certainly is no dearth of information available over the net concerning viral marketing. Right from gurus to established entrepreneurs and website owners who have tried viral marketing, every one wants to be the bearer of good news. Although viral is a very vast subject, this article focuses on presenting a simple and basic explanation about viral as well as its numerous advantages; especially for the benefit of a new business owner.

Classic examples of viral are websites such as Hotmail with came out in the early 90’s and later on Yahoo mail. Who among us does not hold an email account with yahoo or hotmail? By offering free email accounts these websites became leaders in their domain and captured the market base. Pretty soon anyone with access to the internet had an account with either hotmail or yahoo.

Viral pretty much works on the same principles as that of an actual virus; it spreads. Medically of course the word “spread” has scary connotations. However in the world of it simply means passing on or spreading some kind of information. One might say “word of mouth” propaganda, except this is done online. Take for instance a website owner who wants to pass on information about a new product that he is launching. If he were to employ the viral strategy he could offer a free e-book or video. The content of this e-book or video does not necessarily have to contain content that pertains to his business or product. However when he circulates this e-book or video among his network group he knows for sure that this information will be passed along other contacts and sources known to these people. He thus has successfully started a chain

reaction since anything that is free is always up for grabs. A simple link or website address, or even an author bio attached to the e-book or video will result in an explosion of visits to his site. This is the power of viral marketing.

Elements of a successful Viral Campaign

Every campaign has several key ingredients which lead to its success. Viral is no exception. Here are some of the key elements of a successful viral campaign:

· Offers products or services which are typically free – a viral campaign should offer either a product or some service for free. So for example if you are selling your business e-books you could attach free newsletter subscriptions to your package.
· Should allow for easy transfer and sharing – Your products and services and messages should be easily transferable and easy to share. If you are offering video then make sure that the download link is easy to use and share.
· Should allow for scalability from small to big – for example if your product or services requires the usage of specific servers then ensure that it is already in place before you go ahead and set up your viral campaign.
· Targets behavior and motivations which are common to human nature – one of the key ingredients of a viral message is humor; it is also one of the things that get passed around the most. Emails and videos that carry some form of humor or happy message are the ones that we are most likely to pass on among family and friends. Thus if you can build your campaign around such a message you are effectively trapping into a general human tendency thus ensuring the success and sustainability of your campaign.
· Target communication networks with the maximum potential for dispersion – recognize and target resources such as social networking groups where most people are only to happy too happy to pass and share.
· Exploits all available resources – Use resources such as affiliate programs, free article directories etc. to further the viral campaign. The idea is really to reach out to as many people as possible and this requires that you utilize every available resource or tool that can help spread the word about your business product or service.
